About B Portwood & Co Ltd
For over 50 years, travel insurance has been offered by B Portwood & Co Ltd.
In 1963 (over 50 years ago), Mr Bernard Portwood founded the company, which operated in High West Street, Gateshead. (A street that was demolished to make way for an inner-city trunk road)
Since that time, the firm has endeavoured to always act on behalf of their customers, provide them with the most suitable products to meet their needs and help them should they need to make a claim.
Over the years, insurance has changed with many new types of products being developed to meet the changing demands and technical innovations. As Insurance brokers, the firm has moved with the times and has been trading on the internet for over 15 years.
We are members of the British Insurance Brokers Association and previous members of the Institute of Insurance Brokers (the two organizations have now merged).
Over the 50 years in business we have been regulalated under the Insurance Brokers Regulation Council (IBRC), the General Insurance Standards Council (GISC) and, until April 2013, the Financial Services Authority.
We now have two offices:
145 Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland, Co Durham. DL14 7EN (registered office). Tel
01388 607140 – main office for travel insurance

Additional Details
As brokers B Portwood & Co Ltd have access to many different
schemes, not only the ones above and can meet bespoke
requirements of virtually any traveller - if you call us.
We previously offered a travel insurance policy (Redwood Travel
Insurance) underwritten by Mapfre. The scheme was withdrawn as
we were unable to offer competitive travel insurance premiums
for the over 75 when Mapfre withdrew from that market. Since
then we have sourced other suitable suppliers - a quick quote
for approximate rates is available
on our own website, however additional products are
available that we have to process ourselves rather than the
consumer.
