Fine Rogue Landlords
Landlords of HMOs should play by the rules - or else
Oxford has had a clamp
down on landlords who fail to negotiate the extra requirements
when owning a Home
of Multiple Occupation (HMO).
On the surface, buying a large property,
converting it into bedsits and letting it to multiple tenants is a
great idea as the cost per tenant is reduced. However there are
additional requirements imposed by law, to obtain a licence to
operate the HMO and ensure that adequate fire precautions are in
place (as well as the other myriad of rules).
Regrettably some landlords are too greedy,
fixating on gross rental income and trying to skimp the additional
expenses and responsibilities that owning an HMO entails. Oxford
have now fined 34 landlords a total of £55,000
B. Portwood & Co Ltd offer very competitive
landlord insurance rates for bedsits owned by responsible
landlords. A guide to operating an HMO is available
(pdf).
