Landlord Insurance
Guardian against buy to let market
In response to the report issued by Rightmove,
the Guardian
was predictably against the buy to let market.
It cannot be denied that there is a
crisis in the housing market with too many people in pursuit of too
few homes. The change from a letting culture in the 1960s and 1970s
to a home owning culture in the 1980s and beyond per se has nothing
to do with the situation since the same people would be living in
the same houses.
The problem has been the increase in
the UK population. This has manifested itself in extreme conditions
with many immigrants living in virtual shanty towns with poor
quality buildings being erected in gardens of previously built
houses and cases of massive overcrowding in rooms.
Landlords are reminded that they
should ensure that all property meets certain level of construction
and that facilities are checked and certified on a regular basis
(every year for gas for instance). Failure to do so could
invalidate their insurance policy. (Of course those landlords
engaged in these activities probably don't have insurance anyway)
