Travel Insurance for the over 75 with medical conditions

Obtaining travel insurance when you are over 75 with medical conditions is possibly difficult to obtain and expensive into the bargain. However, facilities to cover the over 75 for single trips up to 12 months (to age 85) and for 3 months if older. Annual travel insurance is also available for the over 65.

The Redwood scheme (below) is currently unavailable. Some quotes are available online for over 75 travel insurance with full details how to contact medical screening lines. We recommend you call us on 01388 607140 so we can make a recommendation from our full range of travel insurance.

Our default travel insurance for the over 75 is the Redwood Scheme. This offers three levels of cover: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

The Bronze scheme is probably the cheapest travel insurance for the over 75 on the market. Rates can be 60% of those found elsewhere and the £100 excess can be deleted for a small additional premium. Many over 75 travel insurance providers have substantial excesses, possibly £200 or £500 - especially those compared online. This policy is suitable for most standard holidays.

The silver scheme affords reasonable travel insurance for the over65 - with just a £50 excess whilst the Gold contract was rated as 5 star cover by defaqto in 2012 and includes unlimited cover for medical conditions. We normally suggest that the excess isn't deleted on these policies as the additional premium can exceed the excess - especially for long stays or annual travel insurance

How we rate medical conditions for the over 75.

We utilise a human-based medical screening line, rather than on-line programs to provide quotes for the over 75 who need the travel insurance but have medical conditions. Calling at a sensible time (including week-ends) connects the voyager to our competent staff who will ensure that the pertinent information is requested and the appropriate additional premium quoted, if any. (We recommend that a quote is first obtained online).

Medical conditions are assessed through a proprietary algorithm called Healix (which many insurers use, not just for the over 65). The programme requests details not only of medical conditions but also ages and destinations (naturally extended stays in Canada or Australia are more inherently risky than a weak in Benidorm) and returns a value that equates to the required premium load to cover the medical conditions. There is no upper limit on these values, however quotes are available for values up to 7, which is quite generous.

Should the over 75 pay to have pre-existing medical conditions covered?

Yes! Whilst there is no requirement to pay to cover medical conditions for travel insurance, the over 75 should bear in mind that, as they are over retirement age, claims may occur from existing medical conditions and these claims would not be covered, unless the original conditions are also covered. Since the cost of having medical conditions treated abroad (especially in USA Canada, there is no way we could recommend skipping on this valuable protection.)

The importance of disclosing information on medical conditions

It is vital that pre-existing medical conditions are disclosed when buying travel insurance. It is also important that you check that your travel insurance policy covers your conditions. When you obtain a quote through our travel insurance quotation system you will be provided with contact details of the appropriate screening line - we also offer facilities for you to do the screening yourself and buy cover for all but the most severe conditions.

Examples of pre-existing Conditions we can cover

  • Angina

  • Asthma & respiratory

  • Arthritis

  • Cancer (general and breast cancer)

  • Depression, anxiety and stress disorders

  • Diabetes / Diabetic

  • Disabled conditions / disabilities

  • Epilepsy / epileptic medical conditions

  • Heart Bypass

  • Heart attack

  • High blood pressure

  • High cholesterol

  • Hypertension

  • Stroke

  • High risk

No matter what medical conditions you may have, our travel insurance policies may cover them on referral, - usually at standard premiums. However our travel insurance underwriters may be unable to cover them. In that case we can offer a travel insurance for your condition provided: a) You do not have a terminal prognosis in six months b) you are not travelling against doctor's advice and c) you are not travelling to obtain treatment for that condition.

If the Redwood Contract for over 75 travel insurance is not suitable

The Redwood contract is almost certainly the best travel insurance product for the over 75. However if a traveller is over 85 then they cannot take out the policy. In that case we have a quote system that offers travel insurance for the over 85, or over 90 (there is no upper age limit), however it is not possible to cover more than 3 months for a single trip.

If you want travel insurance for a single person in your party.

Many people are unaware that their own travel insurance policy may not cover additional costs if someone else going with them falls ill! We always recommend travel insurance be arranged to cover all members who are to travel together. Thus the travel insurance company will protect everyone as they know about the condition.

Age limits

Redwood travel insurance covers single trips for people aged to 85 (and yes 365 days is available for an 85 year old) and annual travel insurance up to 74 (90 days a trip). Quotes are available here although medical screening is required.

Length of trips

Long stay travel insurance, usually defined as travel for more than 30 days is available though this is for the younger (i.e. not those over 75) traveller. Cover is usually similar to a normal, single trip, travel insurance policy. However there is a variation: backpacker travel insurance, is suitable for students in their gap year who really only need cover for medical expenses, loss of passport and possibly some luggage cover. The premiums for this are very cheap due to the limited nature of the benefits provided.

Internet policies

Although you are buying this product online, we would like to emphasise that we are an insurance broker and, as such, the policies we offer are substantially better than those you will buy by going through a price comparison website. On those sites you will find policies with excesses over £200 per person per claim (e.g. if you go with a family and all your luggage is stolen then you could find that you have to pay £800 towards the claim - £200 for you, £200 for your wife/ partner and similar amounts for the children. The reduction of cover on these sites gives serious cause for concern as customers won't realise the costs they have to pay themselves until they make a claim. Our excesses, by the way, range from £35 to £65 in most cases, with limits on a family claim and in many cases you can delete them i.e. have no excess at all.
